Global Privacy Control
How the cookie banner honours the Global Privacy Control signal sent by some browsers, what visitors see, what is recorded and how to turn it off.
Global Privacy Control (GPC) is a signal a visitor's browser sends to every site to say "do not sell or share my data". Firefox, Brave and the DuckDuckGo browser send it when the visitor turns it on, and Chrome users can send it with an extension. California and a dozen other US states require businesses to treat it as a valid opt-out of selling and sharing personal data.
#What the banner does
When a visitor's browser sends the signal, the banner:
- keeps the Marketing category off. "Accept all" turns on Preferences and Statistics only;
- leaves Google Consent Mode's advertising signals (
ad_storage,ad_user_data,ad_personalization) on denied; - shows a short confirmation in the banner and in the cookie settings that the signal is honoured, as California requires;
- still asks for the other categories, as European rules require.
A visitor can still turn Marketing on themselves in the cookie settings: an explicit choice for your site takes precedence. A Marketing "yes" given before the browser started sending the signal no longer counts.
#What is recorded
Each choice in the consent log notes whether the signal was present, so you can show that you honoured it. The banner reads the signal in the visitor's browser: nothing is sent to Privacyboard beyond the usual choice record.
#Turning it off
The setting is on by default, in Cookies → Banner → Global Privacy Control. Turn it off only if you are sure no law that requires it applies to you. When it is on, your cookie policy says so.
#For developers
Privacyboard.getConsent() returns gpc: true when the signal is honoured, and the pb_consent_update data layer event carries pb_gpc.
#FAQ
#Is GPC required in Europe?
No European law names it. In Europe nothing non-essential loads before consent anyway, so visitors who send the signal are already protected. Honouring it as well costs nothing and respects their wish.
#Does the banner still appear for visitors with GPC?
Yes. The signal covers selling and sharing data, which the Marketing category stands for. The visitor still chooses for Preferences and Statistics.
